Pascale Degueldre, Belgian Sculptor

Pascale,  des Pas et des Escales ...

An interview with photos by Patrick Bya and Jehanne Hupin.

In a few words, who are you?

An interior decorator in a first hectic life in Ibiza, then back to Belgium and a serious vascular accident, loss of speech and long rehabilitation to be reborn thanks to sculpture. Art saved me.

When and how did you get into your art?

By chance, in a second life, in 2013. A friend invited me to join a free sculpture group.

What does this discipline bring you?

Joy and inner peace.3D is my freedom of expression.

What makes your art unique?

A very inhabited figuration, made of surrealist works, never with a single reading.

What qualities do you think are important for an artist?

The ability to question oneself, observation, reflection, spontaneity, sharing.

What do you consider to be the characteristics of a Belgian artist?

Self-deprecation, the ability to adapt.

If we start with the definition of R. Magritte who says that "to be surrealist is to banish from the mind the already seen and to seek the not yet seen", you are in the middle of surrealism.  What is surrealism for you?

To create a surprising work that is far from the beaten track.

Why is surrealism important?

To step back and see the world from another angle.

What do you like about Belgium that you cannot find anywhere else?

My roots .
