The squares represent the many directions in which an encounter can unfold—between approach and rejection, recognition and exploration. Whether these two figures are old acquaintances reuniting or strangers cautiously sizing each other up remains unclear. It is precisely this openness, this moment of not yet knowing, that the painting seeks to capture.
