Surrealism is a 20th-century artistic and literary movement founded by André Breton in 1924, aiming to free the imagination from rational constraints. In Belgium, surrealism took a unique form influenced by the local cultural and historical context. René Magritte, one of the most famous Belgian surrealist artists, developed a distinct style with enigmatic images and plays on perception, often focusing on the ordinary and everyday, transformed into something mysterious and surprising.
