ROOTS, Bini Edo mask (Benin)

This mask has been made from the imprint of a bronze mask from my personal collection (inherited from my parents in this case). Growing up in Gabon, Cameroon and Ivory Coast: masks have always been part of my Life and left a strong imprint on me.

A transparent mask... an oxymoron from which I haven't quiet grasped yet the multiple readings.

Characteristics

Dimensions: 11,5cm wide x 25cm high

This piece has been made by pouring hot glass at over 1100°C into a mould of sand (sand casting technique. the mold is lost each time and has to be prepared manually making it different each time). Once the hot glass settles and stiffens, it is put in an oven at 500°C. The annealing curve brings the glass slowly down to room temperature in 48h.

Care and use

You can dust of the glass with a soft towel.

If needed, wash it with warm soapy water (not hot), rince well. Dry straight away to avoid traces on the glass
